To help revive a little of the country-gentleman farming so prevalent in the northern part of my county a scant generation ago, an innovative suburban land-use program, the Westchester Land Trust , last year established a Local Land, Local Food Farmers Network.

Now with more participants, the network runs a matching program through which landowners can lease a parcel of land to a would-be farmer. It paired six operations in and already has expanded to eight more in , with more matching in progress. Even though the earnings produced in these operations are not substantial enough to qualify the landowners for tax abatements in our agricultural district, owners are motivated to preserve land and to be part of the local-food movement by encouraging suburban agriculture.

Suburban land can be made more sustainable by farming it, and this creative solution can also help owners to resist the pressure for development. It encourages the creation of conservation easements, which can make the land permanently available for farming. The Land Trust provides some infrastructure for the program by surveying both parties about their needs and goals and making the matches. Once a project is launched, each party takes responsibility to manage it.

The Procurement for Governance Home Grown School Feeding PG-HGSF project has launched its next case study in a series on matchmaking events between smallholder farmers and procuring bodies in the school feeding system. This case study, ‘Matchmaking events connect farmers with the school feeding market in Mali’, was written by Pamela Karg, Laouali Sadda and Katherine Casey.

However, when the PG-HGSF project started in , farmers and their cooperatives either had not considered the school meal programme as a potential market or—if they knew it existed—had not sold any food directly to this market. Commune mayors and school management committees were also not purchasing from smallholder farmers. They were either unaware of local producers with the requisite commercial registrations, or preferred products from outside the immediate community, such as rice, which is easier to prepare than local grains.

Farmers, ranchers, agriculture students and livestock owners can meet on , a social network that has made at least (farmer) marriages.

On this week’s show we take a look at farmland transitions. As the farming population ages, who will take reins? We’ve got farmers hanging up their hats, with no one to take over the family farm, and we’ve got young people, anxious to get started farming, with no land to call their own. We sit in on a workshop with Mary Swander helping farmers map out what they would like for the future of their land, and we talk with two guys who worked out a sweet land deal just a few miles outside of town.

Iowa’s Poet Laureate, Mary Swander , has been touring the US with her play “Map of My Kingdom” about the delicate process of transitioning farmland from one generation to the next. Indiana University’s Elinor Ostrom Project brought Swander to Bloomington to perform the play and to offer a Legacy Letter Workshop for farmers, to help guide them through the first steps in opening up a conversation about the future of their farmland. Swander talks about what’s at stake when landowners fail to plan ahead.

John Byers owns some land just a few miles outside of Bloomington, Indiana. He loves the idea of local food and sustainable agriculture but knew he wasn’t the person to farm the land. Grant Pershing, after working for seven years on other people’s farms, was ready to branch out on his own.

As the coronavirus Covid pandemic takes a hold on the country, the British agricultural industry is key to keeping the shelves stocked and food on our tables. Keeping the wheels turning, with a minimum labour force, as skilled key workers are expected to be taken ill or unable to travel to work, has now become the priority for our industry.

The Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society is calling all university and college students, veterinary students, stock people and anyone who feels their experience fits the bill to contact them now through their website.

A new shearing database to link up UK shearers with farmers and contractors has launched as the sheep sector looks to a difficult season. The Covid crisis is making it increasingly unlikely that the usual influx of highly-skilled overseas shearers will be able to travel to the UK. It is estimated overseas shearers usually shear about 20 percent of the UK flock, leaving a huge hole in resource this season. However, industry organisations are working together to try and ensure that shearing can go ahead using only British shearers.

To safeguard the health and welfare of the sheep flock, shearing is carried out at certain times of the year to minimise the risk of heat stress and fly strike. The National Association of Agricultural Contractor NAAC is hosting a matchmaking register online to bring together shearing contractors – who are potentially missing whole teams of overseas shearers – with UK shearers to try and get the season completed.

Shearers are now encouraged to come forward and register. The organisations are also encouraging farmers to get in touch with their usual contractor to organise their shearing. Jill Hewitt, NAAC Chief Executive, said shearing contractors have a ‘dual role’ in the Covid crisis to keep shearers and customers safe, whilst supporting and providing a vital operation for sheep farmers.

Please contact the news editor Daniel Wild by emailing daniel. Due to coronavirus it seems unlikely that the sheep sector will be able to bring in overseas shearers for the season. Become a fan on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter. Follow us on Instagram.

The main idea behind our list of the top farmer dating websites was to help those looking for a website that will not only make them feel welcome and appreciated, but also help them find love and companionship. There are thousands of dating websites out there, many of them are for farmers specifically, and it can be quite long before you can find one that actually makes sense to you as a user.

We decided to help by researching this particular area of dating websites and assessing them all based on certain factors we believe are important to everyone. The first thing we looked for in a website are the features. We believe that the ideal farmer dating website should have just the right amount of features — not too little and not too many. The whole point of online dating is to find someone special, and we feel that the websites featured on this list have just enough features to make it happen.

As thousands of people are laid off from the hospitality sector amidst the coronavirus COVID outbreak , UK farms have urgently appealed for seasonal workers to help them work the land. But the shortfall in staff means that there are still around 90, vacant jobs harvesting fruits and vegetables, driving tractors, processing and packaging.

Unless there is a sudden influx of willing workers, farmers fear some produce may remain unharvested. The majority of roles begin in late April or early May, although some farmers require workers even sooner to pick asparagus and soft fruits when they come into season. Many also require help with lambing, which peaks mid-spring. Role lengths vary — some placements last for six weeks, while others last up to six months.

Those working in food growing, production and delivery are considered key workers and are therefore able to continue travelling to work as usual. They are also entitled to educational support for their children. As well as sending volunteers all over the world, we also find motivated people from all over the world to work on UK farms. As travel is not currently possible, we need your help to harvest local food this Spring. We have work placements on farms all over the UK.

If you need a job, click the link in our bio to apply. Getting workers onto farms is absolutely vital for the UK to get through this pandemic. We are proud to be supporting everyone in desperate need of a job, and the UK farming industry to continue to Feed the Nation.
