Dating can be brutal, no matter who you are. These feelings and experiences are no different for many adults with Down Syndrome leading active, and fulfilling romantic lives. According to to Couwenhoven, this is partly due to cultural stigma and sex shaming that affects the general population as a whole. Couwenhoven partially attributes much of the lack of information about sexuality in people with Down Syndrome to common misconceptions that individuals with the condition are sterile, incapable of, and uninterested in sex.

A lack of open and frank communication regarding sexual health can also lead to disparities in access to gynecological healthcare. Specialized sex education resources for people with Down Syndrome are increasingly in demand, Couwenhoven explains, but can be incredibly difficult for individuals and their caregivers to access. The presence of caregivers is—in many cases—an obstacle itself, and parental anxiety can be a huge barrier to learning about sex and dating. As young people with Down Syndrome grow into adulthood, many require lifelong support from their parents, who may assist with daily living tasks.

They also run a higher risk for sexual abuse. With all of these factors coming into play, dating with Down Syndrome can be a complicated. Meeting a compatible partner can be challenging for anyone, but this challenge can be amplified for people with Down Syndrome because of difficulties with communication and speech fluency, for example.

She has already helped James to set up a page on a social networking website to invite potential partners to come forward for him.

Newborns and children with Down syndrome may present with many haematological problems. There is also a virtually unique predisposition to a transient neonatal leukaemia, known as transient abnormal myelopoiesis. Deaths from leukaemia, in part, account for the excess mortality associated with Down syndrome. This article reviews the clinical presentation and the progress made in the management of these disorders over the past decade. It also briefly considers the recent exciting scientific advances that have potential to transform management of leukaemia in children with Down syndrome and also have implications for management of childhood leukaemia more generally.

Many abnormalities related to blood count have been reported in small retrospective studies in the neonatal period in Down syndrome box 1. Many neonates with Down syndrome, like those with trisomy 13 and trisomy 18, have haematological features typical of those seen in chromosomally normal infants with intrauterine growth restriction IUGR : mild, transient neutropenia and thrombocytopenia together with increased numbers of circulating nucleated red cells with or without polycythaemia.

These features are often noted as incidental findings. They are probably not clinically relevant, although the ongoing large prospective studies to define these changes more precisely may provide insight into their prognostic relevance. The clinically most important abnormality is the disorder known as transient abnormal myelopoiesis or TAM.

TAM, also called transient myeloproliferative disorder and transient leukaemia, is a haematological disorder virtually confined to Down syndrome and presents during fetal life or in the neonatal period. An identical disorder with the same natural history can also be found in neonates without Down syndrome but who have an acquired trisomy 21 confined to the haematopoietic cells. Clinically, TAM is conventionally defined by a combination of its haematological and clinical features see box 2, and discussed in detail below.

However, molecular genetic studies have recently shown that neonates with TAM have mutations in the key megakaryocyte transcription factor GATA1, 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 which offers the opportunity to more accurately identify the true incidence of TAM in Down syndrome, since some infants with TAM do not have symptoms and may not previously have been diagnosed as having the condition.

For many, down syndrome seems like one of those insurmountable disabilities that can make dating, relationships, and even marriage impossible. For some however, down syndrome is nothing more than a diagnosis from the doctor that is there to be challenged. Kate Owens is one such woman who despite the odds, has overcome her down syndrome to live a full and loving life.

Kate met her husband at a local disco when he, as any other man interested in a woman would do, bought her a drink and they spent the rest of the evening dancing. There was no awkward explanations, no pause because of her disability, and certainly no worries when it came to this blossoming romance. They shared their first kiss at a lunch date and their love only grew. Though down syndrome does has some disadvantages and does tend to make things like dating more difficult than they would be for someone without the disability, a diagnosis of down syndrome does not mean that love is not possible and that love is not something that is essential.
